But in a special new project, netball and rugby league have come together for a duel training session. Players from Manchester Thunder and Wigan Warriors took to the court at the National Cycling Centre to share skills and tips. The clubs both play in their respective Superleagues – the elite league in their sport – and are well into their pre-season training routines, and today’s session was aimed at offering something different to the challenging schedule.
Wigan boss Shaun Wane said he was hopeful his players would learn new techniques and other aspects of the netball game in a bid to improve their own performance on the field. He is especially focused on the Warriors picking up better hand-eye coordination and new drills from the Black and Yellows. These are core aspects of netball, which is still a non-contact sport despite its increasing physicality in recent years. Manchester Thunder team up with Wigan Warriors for training session.
Former England shooter Karen Greig, who took over as Director of Netball at Thunder from Dan Ryan following his move back to Australia to lead the Adelaide Thunderbirds, headed-up the training session. She said: “It was a good morning putting Wigan Warriors though their paces. I am looking forward to working with Wigan again in more training sessions as I think the first one was really useful for both teams.”
