Brooke Vincent is the latest Coronation Street cast member to sign up for the second Soap Showdown charity match against Emmerdale.
Brooke, who plays Sophie Webster on the cobbles, will line up with cast mates Katy Cavanagh, Tisha Merry, Jane Danson and Hayley Tamaddon for the match, in aid of Text Santa. Katy will again captain the team, which will be made up of a combination of cast, crew and Manchester Thunder Superleague players. Team Emmerdale’s Charley Webb will skipper her team, with Michelle Hardwick and Eden Taylor-Draper also lacing up their trainers and pulling on their dress for a second time. Fellow cast-mates Sammy Winward and Amy Walsh will leave the Woolpack behind to join the Yorkshire team to make their netball debut. along with players from Superleague team Yorkshire Jets. |
The inaugural Soap Showdown match between Corrie and their soapland rivals took place in September 2013, when the Weatherfield team were victorious 33-28.
Brooke, who will be playing in her second Text Santa match, hopes to take up her preferred Wing Attack position on the day. She took part in a training session in Stretford with Katy this week, as the team prepare for the match in November. “I like wing attack. Playing in front of all those people last year was so nerve-racking but I enjoyed it. It was like a blur. ”Katy is a great captain – we need a strong backbone and she is that. “It’s a shame as there’s loads of other cast members that wanted to play but if you’re busy filming, it’s hard,” Brooke said. Despite the Emmerdale and Corrie soap stars being friends off-court, fans can expect a fierce contest on-court, with the Yorkshire team keen to avoid a second Showdown defeat. |
“It was the lights, music and the drama on the day that made us realise; we need to win this.”
Katy added: “We have a lot to lose and a bit more pressure because we won last time, that makes it harder.
“The more time went on, the more mental it got and the more we wanted to win.”
Katy, who has carried on playing netball in a team alongside Jane Danson, after falling in love with the sport, said ” It’s great to do something outside of Corrie with the crew getting involved too. It’s good for us to hang out with the crew, they’re wicked. I’m a netball fanatic now – a bit of a convert, I play centre.
” I hadn’t played for 25 years and with schemes like Back to Netball, it is so easy to get into. I’m so glad I found it again. I just love it.” ”Last year’s match was really full on.
“It’s cool I can play netball and raise money for charity at the same time.”
The match will take place at the Thunderdome in Gorton on Saturday, November 22 at 2.30pm.
The charity match is to raise funds for ITV’s Text Santa, which supports a number of charities such as Age UK and Barnardo’s.
